Your First Step To Success – Do You Have It In You?

Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur?
Do you believe that you can own & run a successful business?
The Thinking TurtleHave you ever asked these questions to yourself?

If we were sitting across a table right now, how would you respond If I asked you these questions?

Most importantly what is your response to yourself?

How did you or rather how did your mind react on being posed these questions the very moment you read it at the beginning here?

If you are someone like me and have a 9-5 job, chances are that the idea was quickly dismissed with not a million but a very few specific reasons or should I say perceived reasons why you cannot be your own boss and be successful.
Recently I’ve been having a lot of conversation about being allowed to work from home and it eventually leads to running your own business.I realized that a lot of people wish they could be running their own business but……..

There are reasons, not many, some are genuine, but are they showstoppers? I think not…..

How Can You Own a Successful Business & Be Your Own Boss?

I cannot tell you how to start a business or the things you should do to be a successful business man or a business woman, I simply cannot.

Why?

I could share insights, tips and habits you can build but in the end, it won’t work until you take action.

So if you’re really interested in eventually getting out of a 9-5 job, here’s a simple first step that you could do.

Go over the 2 questions again, take a paper and make a note of all the perceived short-comings/reasons/challenges/ obstacles and write them down.

[Don’t make these up, if you really have a passion for something or if there is something that you’ve always wanted to do, list what stopping you now]

  1. Draw a line next to it and in the next column write down, what can you do to get a meet the challenge, no matter how small a thing it is.
  2. Draw a third column and list how will you go about doing it & in how much time do you think you can get it done.
Table of Evaluation
Example of an Evaluation Table

“What is the one thing that I can do today that can get me closer to getting over my obstacles”

Get Your Mind To Work For You

Keep asking these questions as often as you can throughout the day. If that is not possible do it the first thing in the morning and the last thing when you go off to sleep. (preferably after going through the table you’ve created)

Soon you will either build enough momentum & confidence (by taking little steps each day) and might actually get started or the worst thing that is going to happen is you might fail.

Nothing bad is going to happen to you, you’ll fail but that is 10x better than not trying.

Remember it’s the first step that is the hardest!!!

  2. Hi, I just recently accidentally discovered your blog, and I really like it. It seems that you really want to help people, and I appreciate it! You seem like a very nice person. It looks like you really know what you’re talking about.

When it comes to success, the most important thing is to believe in yourself. Simply believe in yourself and work hard. Work can become really easy when you know that one day it will pay off…

  3. Hi Josh,
Your evaluation table is a very helpful tool to get started fulfilling your dreams. I like how there is a “no excuses” approach to it. Having no money for the creative writing class is no excuse since you can find all of the same information on the Internet. I really like that and it helps stay focused on a solution oriented mindset.

  4. I like your evaluation chart. It could really help to dig down to the attitudes about oneself that could enhance or block the grand venture of self employment. It does take courage to plunge into such activity for many. Finding and expressing one or two strong points that a person had never verbalised to him or herself could provide the mental leverage to get going!

  5. This was a really inspiring post.

Mindset is everything and your post really brings it home that becoming a successful marketer is less about tools, tricks and tactics and more about developing the confidence internally to be successful.

I think that anyone who is interested in developing a home business will get a lot of value from reading this post.

  6. Thank you for this wonderful blog on how to succeed as an entrepreneur. Taking the first step would differently be the biggest step that most of us wont take.

This is a good motivation blog you have that will get people to take that first step to becoming independent.

    Thank You

  7. Hi there,

That was a brilliant opening to the post, posting 3 engaging questions.

I most certainly believe in do indeed have it in me to own and operate a successful blog. In fact to dominate my niche! You site is beautiful and awesome, keep up the good work and you will be successful.

  8. Thank you for opening my eyes to the possibilities of ‘self employment’ within the on-line publishing world. My computer knowledge is very basic at present so I think I need to invest some time educating myself on how to use the facilities my computer offers.

I agree with you that taking action is the only way to get started but I think that not giving up when obstacles present themselves is also important.

Someone once told me that ‘the secret to success in anything was being prepared to do whatever it takes’.
They also said that it may not necessarily be inevitable that I would need to do whatever it takes, just be prepared for it and accept it as a part of the success process.

  9. Josh that was an excellent article that you wrote on how it could be possible for people to achieve success at running their own business.

As for myself I feel that it simply must be a belief within one’s own being that they CAN succeed, that being the very core within their thought patterns.

If you feel that you will fail, if you allow that negative vibe to seep into your thought patterns then most likely it will happen.

In addition, which you also added you must be willing to WORK at achieving success – laying out attainable short and long term goals and then sticking to the plan of action that you create for yourself enabling you to eventually succeed in having a profitable online business.

Actually this work ethic would apply to anything, not just running an online business. LeBron James did not become a great basketball player solely because he had the inherent genes. Yes, it helps that he is 6’8″ tall. But he had to WORK his entire life, in fact he still puts effort into the gym during the off-season seeking to improve his skills.

Too many people think that everything will come so easily to them, no real effort is necessary on their part to achieve success, make $$$ having an online business.

Sadly too many people today fail because of that very reason. They are not willing to roll up their sleeves and put in the effort daily – especially in owning a successful online business.

Your article is excellent. Anyone who has doubts about going out on their own and away from being trapped in a 9 – 5 job should really read what you have to say in your article as a source of both education and inspiration!

Super job, Josh in writing this article!

    Sincerely,
    Jeff

    1. Hey Jeff,

I am glad you liked the article. You were spot on when you said that people are not willing to roll up their sleeve and put in efforts “daily”.Everyone sees successful people but what they don’t see all the effort behind the scenes. Consistency is the key to success.

Thanks for visiting my site and I hope you keep coming back 🙂

  10. I’m a big fan of motivation. Yes I do agree that taking a little step everyday will lead you to success. And the first step may be the hard, but I don’t think first step is always the hardest. Some people struggle more in the midst of their journey. And some people struggle more right before their about to accomplish their goals. What’s your take on that?

    1. Hey Joon,

It’s true that most people give up right before they accomplish their goals and some struggle in the midst of their journey but if they do, they do it because of a different reason or reasons. When I say that the first step is the hardest it’s because when you begin there is self doubt and there is a fear of failure (fear of unknown) which most people find difficult to overcome. There is also the feeling that you get when you know there are going to be changes in your life and changes might make you feel uncomfortable.

If you already started working towards your goals and struggle, you can always look back to see how far you’ve come and how much you’ve achieved. There might also be tangible results that will motivate you further and push you ahead which is not the case when you begin, you start with a clean slate.

  11. Hi Josh!

Great niche site on motivating oneself for access and helping those who have had obstacles and frustrations along the way.-Success all starts in the head as the experts have said over and over-Good assortment of headings to help a develop an approach to get organized . I like your style and you enthusiasm as demonstrated in your blog under “About me”. Great website-I like your introduction about yourself
and why you created this site-I always key in on this section when I first visit a site to make comments to understand why the designer made his site. Good introductions I’ve found always show compassion and enthusiasm which motivate me to continue evaluating your site.

    1. Hi Timothy,
Thank you taking the time out and I am glad you’ve like this post.
Thanks for your feedback. I know I need to work on the visual aspect of my blog post and I am trying to improve with each blog post.

  12. I really like the chart you drew with the questions and answers if you wanted to be a writer. I’m predominantly a visual learner and so this really made sense to me. Thank you.

I would like to know what your answers were for yourself, what had stopped you previously and what changed that gave you the courage to try your hand in an online business. I’m hoping to find some inspiration.

    1. Hi Rawl,

I am glad you liked the chart and found it helpful. In fact, it was a result was a valuable feedback that was shared on the previous post.

Actually the table that I shared is my own and since I’ve known so many people who wanted to be writers I thought I put it out there hoping someone would benefit from it.

To be honest, all the things that was stopping me were just excuses. Though I may not everything I ever wanted there are so many things I am grateful for, nothing changed I just realized that no matter what, I am responsible for where my life is headed and I find this both scary as well as empowering.

Each day I look at myself with the goal to live today better than yesterday, it’s that simple for me 🙂

  13. I enjoyed how you set up your site . . you have used a questions as a great way to get people thinking about what they need do and this will be a good lead in for your next post . You could continue this method in your next posts to provide continuity . Good work keep it up .

    1. Thanks Doris,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and I am glad to know that my intention of posting questions is working 🙂

  14. Hi there! I totally agree with you that the first step is always the hardest. I can relate in that situation before I started to learn about passive income. It was just a year ago when I learned that it is the way in order to be successful in business. I had a hard time understanding passive income at first but eventually got a grasp of it. By the way, you saying about a successful business and i can be my own boss, how is that going to happen? I mean is it even possible?

    1. Hey John,

      Thanks for visiting the site.

Do I think it is possible for someone to own a successful business and be their own boss? Absolutely.

Do I think it’s going to be easy? Here I would like to quote my favorite film character Loki, ” If it were easy, everyone would do it.”

  15. Hi,
I really enjoyed your website. We are on fairly similar paths albeit in different parts of the globe! I have the security blanket of a 9-5 which I feel keeps me from “feeling the fear” and having to make a go of my own business. Over the past few months, if not longer I decided to hand my notice in. I’ll be finished work before Christmas and ready to concentrate on my own business. Hugely exciting! In the meantime I am living as though I have already done it. Feels so good 🙂 Taking action is key! I like your site, it is now in my bookmarks and I look forward to reading more from you.
    Best wishes 🙂

    1. Hey Alex,
I am really grateful that you took the time out to leave a comment here, it’s definitely encouraging. I’d love for you to visit regularly (I try to post one every Monday) and hope you find it useful.
Congratulations on taking action, deciding to quit your job and letting go of your safety net takes immense courage and determination. I am really glad that you’ve decided to take action. I wish you all the best in your endeavors.
      Stay motivated!!!

  16. This is great motivation for me to get off my ‘behind’ and see what I can really do with my small blog! I started off about a month ago but I don’t really have direction in where I’m going with it! It seems to me that I need a bit of education behind me – you obviously took this step, where did you learn your trade online?

    1. Hey Chris,

I am glad you found this motivational and I hope you continue to visit this site regularly (I make it a point to at least post one article every Monday)

When you have a lot going on in your life, it’s easy to feel lost and without direction and there are still times when I feel lost too and I think it’s normal.

By education I hope you don’t mean college education, I think we learn too much of what we need to do and how we need to do but no one teaches you the why 🙂

I have not taken any formal training (again going back to education), but I really like helping out people who ask for my help. Setting up this website is something that I’ve been wanting to do for so long until I decided to take action. Once you get your wheels turning, its much easier to keep on rolling 🙂

      P.S:

I’d really like to take a look at your website (if you want to share the details)

  17. Hi Josh
I like your approach to helping someone finally believe that they can make it in enetrprise development. Those steps are very key in determining one’s power to press on and overcome obstacles.
I especially liked the table. It brought things in closer perspective and seemed to offer solutions. That’s a nice formula!
