Monkey See…Monkey Do

Late Last Night

I was going back home from work last night. I had the worst start to the day. I couldn’t sleep well, woke up at 10 am instead of 7 am, and made a mad dash and reached office. By the time I was halfway through the day , I was lethargic. Continue reading “Monkey See…Monkey Do”

Productivity: How Doing Less Makes You More Productive

How To Be More Productive?

If you scour the internet you will come across numerous articles on how to be productive. If you were to take all the articles and group them the most common categories will be about:

  1. How To Deal With Procrastination.
  2. Effective Goal Setting & SMART Goals.
  3. Effective Time Management.
  4. X ways to increase productivity [Replace X with your favorite number]

Not that there is anything wrong with these articles or the information contained is incorrect.

It’s more like treating the symptoms than fixing the problem.

Then there are those fancy tools and leather bound planners and organizers. However no amount of planning is going to make you productive if you do not take action.Apps and Organizers like todoist, wunderlist, and Filofax aid productivity, but in the end they are just tools.
Sometimes all you need is a pen and paper.

So How To Be Productive?

Productivity Tools
Image Courtesy: Oscar Nilsson @ unsplash.com

Before I answer that let me ask you
What does being productive mean?

Will you agree if I say Productivity means getting things done?
Now that we agree that productivity means getting things done is it reasonable to assume that you can either get things done by someone or do things yourself?

You need money to get things done.
If you have money would it not make sense to spend some money to get the work done, to free up your time to make even more money?
For Eg: If you earn $10 an hour and there is a task that will need 2 hours of your time but you can have it done by someone else for as less as $5 you should outsource it. If you use the time saved on earning more money, you are not spending $5 but making $15 more.

So by outsourcing the non-essentials and focusing on your core tasks you are making more money by doing less?

What if you don’t have money?

MoneyThis would mean that instead of spending money (which you don’t have) you will have to spend time to do things.

But you only get 24 hours each day and you can only do so much in one day right?
Well, if you have limited resource you would use it wisely wouldn’t you?

So in this case you will only spend your 24 hours doing things that matter?

Wait, so even if I don’t have money but only time, I will only do things that matter and not everything?

Productivity Is Not about Doing Everything, It is about doing things that matter.

Now that you know what productivity truly means, instead of making a To-Do List, create a “Not To Do List”

How To Set Realistic Goals?

How to Set Realistic Goals?
How often is it that we achieve the goals that we set at the start of each year?
Sometimes we are so caught up with life that we forget about our goals.

Then there are times when you don’t seem to me making progress fast enough and life seems to be stuck in second gear for far too long.

You are putting in the efforts but don’t seem to be making any real progress.

This could be due to one or all the reasons below:

  1. Not Taking Action
  2. Forgetting about Goals
  3. Setting Unrealistic Goals

While taking action is the foundation to being successful it is easy to get discouraged and disheartened when you don’t see the results you were hoping for even after putting in the efforts. This could happen if you have set unrealistic goals.

In the comment section Andrea asked me how to keep goals realistic?

A question that we often do not consider during planning & goal setting.
Is my Goal realistic enough to be achieved?

I do not mean question your ability or doubting yourself. It’s not the goal but the deadline that could be unrealistic.

Let’s take an example of weight loss as a goal.

The ideal way to lose weight would be slowly and gradually over a period of time. Yet people will sent unrealistic expectations and go on a crash diet. The problem with diet is that you can live on a diet for only so long. The loss of weight gets easily reversed when you stop dieting.

Here the expectation to lose weight is unrealistic [in a matter of weeks] and the method no sustainable.
So How Do You Set Realistic Goals?
What Is My WHY?
The most important step of setting your goal is to know your WHY.
Why do I want to do this? Why do I want that?
Write it down so that you always remember.
You are going to need it when you no longer have the motivation or will power to keep going.

Where Am I Now?

Assuming your goal is to be a writer. As a writer where do you rate or rank yourself now. What are the areas you need to work on?
If being wealthy is one of your goals, you should be clear on how broke you are.
If having a great career is your goal then your current state should be clear.

Where Do I want to Be? How Do I know When I Get There?

You have your WHY and you know WHERE you are right now but how do you know when to stop? Think of it this way.
You decide you are going to run a mile tomorrow morning, you set out in the morning and keep running but how do you know when to stop.
Yes you want to be wealthy but what is your definition of being wealthy?

These 2 questions will make your goal really specific.

Define the Timeline

Setting a realistic timeline can make a difference between achieving a goal or quitting without making much headway.
When you think of defining a timeline you also need to consider the resources at your disposal. By resources I mean time, money and how much of both you have at your disposal to achieve the goal.

You also need to consider that along with working on this goal there are other things that you might have to do. If you want to be an online entrepreneur along with having a fulltime job, you need to be realistic about the time you are going to be able to spend building your business. Also delay and procrastination is going to make sure that you don’t reach your goal on time.

In Summary:

  1. Know Your WHY.
  2. Measure Your Start Point, Set Your End Point.
  3. Allocate Time Based on your schedule
  4. Take Action & Measure Progress

How Do I Want To Feel Today?

How Do I Want To Feel Today? How Do You Start Your Day?
When you wake up each day, how do you feel?
Do you feel tired, grumpy, angry, sad and disappointed or do you feel happy, cheerful, calm, relaxed or excited each day you wake up?

It has been a while since I have felt excited. Happy but not excited as in really looking forward to get out of bed and just hit the road and get on doing whatever it is that I want to do.

Your mental state says a lot about the state of your life doesn’t it?

If you really want to know what you want all you have to do is ask yourself.

How Do I Want To Feel Today?

Not what you want but how do you want to feel.

The answer might surprise you but it will give you enough clues to tell you that you are headed in the right direction or need to do course correction.

In fact if you cannot set aside time for a morning routine then let asking this simple question to yourself each morning be your morning routine. Every morning before you get started with anything else ask yourself: “How Do I Want To Feel Today”

It is surprising that it is the human tendency to always maintain control and yet how easily we give up control at the same time.

A stranger on your commute to work could pick and argument with you and ruin your day. A office colleague or your friend could say something mean and hurtful and get your spirits down. Someone’s constant bickering and complaining disturb your own peace.

When any of the above happens, just remind yourself the answer to the question:
“How Do I Want To Feel?”

Decisions & Success: What Is decision?

Being Confused and the Trait of Indecisiveness

Have you come across a very confused individual, someone who cannot make up their mind about anything and take timely decisions? They think and constantly deliberate but cannot seem to come to a conclusion. They don’t want make a wrong decision and therefore end up making no decision at all.

Different Types of decisions

I was so scared of making an incorrect decision that I would end up taking no decision at all until I was forced to make a decision.
I would think endlessly in my head about the pros and cons of each option in front of me, over and over again. This process of deliberation was mentally taxing and emotionally draining. The agony I endured reflected upon my face. I would try to delay making a decision to a point that it was no longer a decision of mine but the only remaining option. When you are forced to make a decision that you wouldn’t rather make, you are no longer in control of your life.

Then there was the other side to it. When life seemed to have stood still and yet time passed by swiftly I would panic. Whenever I saw my peers and colleagues move ahead in their lives be it a career, relationship or finances I would realize how boring and stationary my life had been and I was desperate to make a change. To escape this I would make rash, ill thought decisions that served me no purpose.

The Decision cycle

So I went from being rational in the decision making process , procrastinated about taking the decision then forced to make a decision which caused me to take rash and emotional decisions.

The Truth about Decisions

What I realized is that there is no thinking model or process that guarantees that you will take the right decisions all the time. You just won’t.
In its essence a decision is the act of coming to a conclusion after deliberating on the choices you have at your disposal. You can take a day, a week or a month, years even to think and deliberate on your choices but once you come to a conclusion, you must act.

Don’t Buy Self Help Books, They Won’t Get You Anywhere

I have always been an avid reader of self help books and online articles. I preferred books that imparted knowledge and thought that reading anything apart from the news paper or books in the non-fiction genre was a waste of time.

It’s not that I only read self help books to gain knowledge. I read enjoyed the anecdotes the authors shared like the mini paradigm shift by Stephen Covey in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People or the story of a sales man with his flash cards in The Power of Positive Thinking. It was also of interest to me how successful people achieved their success and fueled my own desire to be successful.

I've experienced several different healing methodologies over the years - counseling, self-help seminars, and I've read a lot - but none of them will work unless you really want to heal. - Lindsay Wagner

One day I asked myself how I have benefited from reading all self help material that I have been reading for the past 5 years. I have been reading a lot of content about self development, motivation and productivity but what was the net gain from it? How much did I grow as a person and was there a way for me to quantify the benefits I gained?

When I am disheartened I often go back to the question, “What is my WHY?” and the sole purpose of writing this blog was to be able to connect with people who want to be successful in life just like me. I don’t post here regularly but only when I think I can provide something of value to my readers who just like want to find out how to be successful in life. I write from the heart, pen down my point of view and write about things that either make sense to me or work for me.

Therefore I think that my point of view of why Self help books never worked for me might be helpful to you if you are in a similar situation.

I think that I shouldn’t have wasted [wasted not invested] all the money and more importantly time in self help material because it does not work the way it is supposed to work and that is the truth for most people. I say this because if there are supposedly millions of copies sold then there should be at least a million more successful people right?

Here’s another fact that I realized, no matter how much money I spent on buying books, training programs or hiring a coach, it was not going to make a difference unless I was prepared to accept the fact that I am responsible for myself and I was going to need to take action if I ever was going to be successful.

I was so desperate to be successful that in my mind I was sure that reading this book or going to that training program is all I needed to be successful in life. I set the bar of expectation too high and patience level too low and I ended up being disappointed. I kept looking for other resources on the internet.Blogs such as this, articles, videos, free training programs but none of them worked.

It didn’t work because I was not willing to work to make the necessary changes to be successful in life.

For me the problem was that a particular personal development or self help resource did not apply to my situation and that there were other resources that I hadn’t discovered yet that would make me successful. Our brains tries to take the easy way out when it encounters a task it finds unpleasant. I didn’t want to invest in the stock market because it was too risky. The truth is I was not willing to learn how it works. I don’t want to publish a book because no one would like to read what I write when the truth is that I am going to need to work hard and push myself outside my comfort zone to learn about how to publish and market my book.

The problem isn’t self help books; the problem is that I won’t help myself.

How to Make Self Books Work for you?

Any book is a self-help guide if you can take something from it.
– Kevin Smith

In the past couple of weeks I have learnt and see myself constantly reminding myself that is very important to surround yourself with people who love you and have your best interest at heart. I learnt that almost anything that is essential cannot be quantified and is invisible. I learnt this not from any self help books but from reading fiction because when I opened the book I had no expectation whatsoever.

I was so engrossed in reading and understanding the words and thoughts that those words and thoughts were now my words and thoughts. When you start reading any book, especially self help or personal development books have zero expectations from the book.

Rather than reading try to get into the frame of reference of the author, understand the content and if it makes sense to you get to using it right away. Don’t wait for the perfect time or day, just get started and keep using it until it no longer makes sense to you or you come up with your very own solution.

Another important thing to remember is if you find what you learnt from a book to be helpful keep revisiting the book even if it’s only to read the text you’ve highlighted, you will almost always discover something new that you missed previously.

I’ve read “A million little pieces” by James Frey at least 4 times but each time I find something fresh to take away from the book. The last time I read it I learnt about how any sort of addictions works in a way that I had never viewed it before.

Self Help Books Don’t Make You Successful.

Imagine being successful just by reading a couple of books? I would memorize each and every page if that were possible. Self help books should not be thought of as means to riches.

A good way to learn is to learn from your mistakes; even better way to learn is to learn from the mistakes of others.

A couple of self help books comes with years of experience from the authors, what worked and what did not work for them. Think about it, even this post comes from my personal experience with self help books. You will make mistakes no doubt but by learning from the mistakes of other you learn to avoid the most common ones.

Books are mediums of learning not secret pathways to success. There is no guaranteed formula for success; each one must carve his own way. If you are better equipped with knowledge and the information you need you will get there faster. Others will learn from their mistakes and get there eventually. You are unique and so are your goals and areas of learning. Instead of reading from a pre-defined list identify your areas of strength and weakness and discover books, training programs, articles that best suit you. If you are trying to learn a trade or technique just one book is not enough. Get involved; follow people who are considered authority in that field. What Have I Been Up To? My New Year’s Resolution for 2016

8 out of 10 people fail in achieving their new year’s resolution. 36% percent of the people don’t even get through the first month.

What happened to my last year’s New Year Resolution?

The same that happened every year, I forgot about until it was almost the New Year and I got to thinking about My New Year Resolution again.

I realized that after the 1st or the 2nd week of January had passed, I was so caught up the monotony of life that I forgot to my “why” and eventually I forgot about my the New Year resolution.

New Year Resolution

What have I done to ensure 2016 is going to be Legendary?

I created an visual representation of my New Year Resolution similar to the picture above.
I enrolled in an online class to learn how to be a better writer and I was acquainted with the pre-writing process.

According to the lecturer, pre-writing is the most critical and yet the most over-looked step in the writing process.
As I dug deeper in understanding this process, I realized that most of the time I had a faint idea of what I wanted to write about but lack of planning or structuring the main message meant putting in a lot of time re-working what I wrote and sometimes abandoning what I started with.

What if I applied the same process to my New Year Resolution for 2016?

The New Year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.
– Melody Beattie

However setting goal is just a facet of a brilliant diamond, a single facet is not enough for the diamond to sparkle but nonetheless important.

Is your New Year’s Resolution congruous or in harmony with your inner desire?
After all why would you want to put in time and effort in achieving something that adds little value to your life ?

You are unique, why should your goals be any different?

What each person wants in life is unique and influenced by a variety of factors like a person’s current situation [mental, physical and emotional] as well as their life experiences.

The goals of individual who struggles to make meets end will dramatically differ from an individual who has relative financial stability but longs for a meaningful relationship.
Also as each of these factors changes, so do a person’s desire, needs, wants & goals.

The beauty of time is that it does not discriminate.

For time, everyone is equal and everyone equally gets 24 hour each day. It cannot be stored or saved, it can only be spent.
Finding out what you want v/s what you need can help you focus your energy and efforts in area that need immediate attention. Life is about setting priorities, the right priorities.

Exercise Your Mind: Finding Out What You Want?

Free writing is one of the techniques I picked up while taking the course.
In summary, you set up a 5 minute timer and start writing anything and everything that comes in your mind  and then stop when time is up.

The key is you don’t stop or pause even for a second, if you cannot think of anything type “I am unable to think of anything” or “This is a stupid idea”. Spelling mistakes don’t matter and the backspace key does not exist.

When you are free writing you remove any sort of a self restraint and tap into your sub-conscious.

At the end of my free writing session which I titled “What Do I Want to Achieve in 2016”, I came up with a list of things.

I was consciously aware of most of the things on the list but there were a few things I observed that surprised me.
For example: Financial security was my top priority or worry however I was no longer as much concerned about having a better job.

In short I was content with my present job but at the same time very much concerned about my financial stability if something tragic and unexpected happened to me.

I highlighted all the points and made a list [99 in total]. As I went through the list I observed most were either repetition or related to each other and I grouped them together in a spreadsheet.

“You Can Do Anything, But Not Everything.”

Now I had my groups in place and a list of things that I wanted to do, but I could not do everything, at least not all of them at the same time. Also staring at a list was counter-productive for me as it made me feel overwhelmed with so much work that I needed to do.

“A picture is worth thousand words”

Now that I had a detailed list, I wanted “the big picture” that I could look at to remind myself of my goals that I set for myself. I used an excellent mind mapping tool that not only allowed me to create an over-view of my goals but also showed interdependency between task.

In the image representation below, I created a mind map of a goal  to show the inter-dependency of tasks as well as an over-view of the entire process of getting a book published that I could think of in a matter of couple of minutes to give you an idea of how easy it is to look at an image than read a list.Mind Map - Being An Author

Up until this point if you think that the process is too lengthy and cumbersome, then you are absolutely right, I too felt the same, but as I stated earlier, prewriting is the most critical and yet the most over-looked step in the writing process and it was at this point I understood why is overlooked even though being such a critical step.

What you cannot measure you cannot manage.

Each weekend I set aside some time and just take stock of the things I accomplished in the entire week, and I compare it with what I had planned to complete from my previous week’s notes. This help me measure my progress.

Then I go over my mind maps and pick an area that I would like to work upon and make a task list out of it. Some tasks would just take an hour; others would need to be done daily.

I don’t store them in my head I make a To-Do List for it.

It is important to measure your performance.
For example: One of my goals is to eat healthy and still lose weight and the way to do it is to track what I eat (I use My Fitness Pal for that). Recording what I eat not only helps me keep a track of my calorie intake but the logging also helps me measure my performance through the week.
Find ways to measure your performance, automate if possible.

How Much Progress Have I Made?

To be candid, I haven’t made much progress. But as each week goes by, I realize that time is fleeting and the next day I try to push myself a little harder than yesterday.

When I go through the progress I’ve made and compare it against the things I planned on getting done, I am holding myself accountable. It also helps me get realistic of the time frame required to get things done.

Most importantly it keeps me focused on my goals and every time I think I am having an off day, I push myself just a little bit harder knowing well that I have a long way to long and now is just the beginning.

If you’ve made it so far, then you are genuinely committed to achieving your goals.

Before you get started with the free writing, ask these questions to yourself and think about it for a couple of minutes. Do not restrict your thoughts and then start with the free writing.

  1. If I die today, how would I like to be remembered?
  2. What will it take to be the kind of person I would like to be remembered as?
  3. How do I go about it?

In Summary:
  • You are unique, why should your goals be any different?
  • Exercise Your Mind: Find Out What You Want
  • You Can Do Anything, But Not Everything.
  • A picture is worth thousand words
  • What you cannot measure you cannot manage.

What Are The Daily Habits of Successful People?

Ever wonder what differentiates successful people from the countless others who just scrape by, living from pay check to pay check?
How are successful people different from people who struggle most of their lives, trying to achieve financial freedom?

Are there any daily habits of successful people that makes them rich? If yes, what are these daily habits that you can follow?

Successful people are successful because they use the knowledge they have and apply it in their daily lives in order to be successful.
[For example: Almost everyone knows that exercise is beneficial to their health, yet how many of us exercise regularly?]

Successful people invest in themselves, they equip themselves with the knowledge and empower themselves with the tools to achieve their goals.
Successful people know that time is an invaluable, limited and a non – renewable resource that should not be equated with money. They don’t trade time for time.

The Secret To Success Is Taking Action.

There is no easy way to be successful, no matter how much you know and what your circumstances are, in the end it all comes down to taking action. Motivation & will power are helpful but do not last for long.

The best way to achieve success is to make success a habit.
By creating positive & powerful habits, taking action becomes simpler.

What are the Daily Habits of Successful People?

Daily Morning Routine

Successful people do not wake up each day with the intention to wing it. They create daily routines that help them power through each day. Having a daily morning routine not only sets the tone for the rest of the day, but by repeating a routine over time makes you more efficient and helps create powerful habits. Habits get stronger over time to a point where motivation and will power do not matter.

Do you need motivation or will power to brush your teeth each morning? Imagine if you could make exercise a part of your morning routine and do it long enough that it becomes a habit.

Self Improvement & Development

Successful people are in a continual state of learning and improvement.

Reading: Rather than spending too much time watching T.V, successful people invest time reading extensively. They read to get good at their areas of weakness, get better at their strong points.
Exercise: Successful people realize personal health and well-being is much more valuable than money and they invest the time and money in their well being. When someone asked Richard Branson about his secret for being more productive, Mr. Branson simply replied, “Work Out” [Source: Tim Ferriss: The 4-Hour Body]

Build Valuable Network: There is an African proverb that goes like, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with people”. Successful people understand the value of building and maintaining valuable and meaningful relationships. Not only do you learn from the experiences of others, it helps you grow your circle of influence.

Wealth Management

Warren Buffet once said, “Wall Street is the only place that people ride to in a Rolls-Royce to get advice from those who take the subway”. Successful people don’t live from paycheck to paycheck but create multiple streams of revenue.

Most people don’t realize that money saved is actually money earned and by making a long term investment you already have 3 sources of revenue.

Daily Habits of Successful People In A nutshell
  1. Invest in self development first and foremost.
  2. Build meaningful and valuable network
  3. Learn to Manage Wealth, generate additional sources of income.

How To Attract Success Using The Law Of Attraction

Law of attraction - exampleI attended a peak performance seminar in September this year.

“I am going to show you how to make money using the law of attraction”, the speaker said. I was preoccupied and though I heard it, it didn’t register then and I had completely forgotten about it until a few days ago.

A friend of mine attended a workshop a couple of weeks later and told me that he experienced a positive outcome and he was able to make money using the law of attraction. He deeply desired to attend the workshop but was short of some cash and he believed that he was going to attend the seminar and visualized himself attending the seminar.

This was the first time I heard of a law attraction success story.

The immediate thought in my head, Really? I can just sit here and think I am wealthy and become rich?

What is Law of Attraction?

Law of attraction basically states that you can bring positive or negative experiences in your life by focusing on positive or negative thoughts. The Law of Attractions works both ways, positive as well as negative.

Is the Law Of Attraction A Marketing Gimmick?

Think & Grow Rich is expounds more on the law of attraction.
There is no fast way to become successful, it takes hard work.

There is a growing interest in the concept of Law of Attraction and there are a lot of books, audio tapes and video DVD’s that you teach you how to use law of attraction to make money, find the perfect soul mate and attract success. There are also many Law of Attraction Success Stories on the internet that I could easily find with a simple google search.

However Law of attraction has received it’s fair share of criticism too. There are those who call it a pseudo-science and say that the effect of Law Of Attraction cannot be measured nor it’s results reproduced.

A lot of people use exaggeration & over simplification to push products related to Law of Attraction to innocent & in need people, people that want to make a change in their lives, people that are willing to try just about anything to change their current situation.

People like you and people like me, who want to have a better life for themselves and for the people they care about.

What about the Law of Attraction Success Stories?

Have you heard of the placebo effect? At the surface, benefits of placebo effect sounds ridiculous because patients are given fake drugs but it produces real results. The extent of placebo effect depends on the expectation of patient receiving the treatment (sound familiar?).

It works because they expect it to work, they believe it to work.

The power of belief should not be under-estimated. In most of the law of attraction success stories that I read, people believed in themselves and got to work just like my friend who was able to make some money on the side to be able to attend the workshop.

How to Attract Success Using The Law Of Attraction?

Ideal Representation of law of attractionLaw of Attraction in essence is a combination of visualization, self- affirmation & positive thinking and most importantly taking action.

Visualize: Define What do you want in life and Why  you want it. Let it give you a sense of direction and purpose. But thinking about it is not enough, write it down. Each morning when you wake up and each night when you go to sleep, read it. Visualize that you already have it. Strengthen your mental map, each day, every day.

Strategize: When you know where you want to be & why you want to be there, getting there is just a matter of putting in efforts, focused effort. I cannot tell you how to do it, that is for you to figure out (not something you expected from Law of Attraction did you?).

I share below a table I created in my earlier post about taking the first step to success but the table below is kind of self explanatory for you to create a strategy. To delve deeper into the topic I invite you to read earlier post.

Creating a strategy to achieve your goal
Creating a strategy to achieve your goal

Take Action: Nothing is going to change unless you make changes in your life. Things will happen if you make them happen. Take all the time you need, but once you’ve made a decision, just go at it.Let the 5 Principles of Getting Things Done guide you.

Self Belief: Have faith in your self and in your abilities. Nothing sabotages one’s effort in personal success than self doubt. Sure you are going to have days when you think you can’t do it, times when you think this is not possible. (When I published this post, I re-read it and thought this is horrible, maybe I should give up and this ain’t my cup of tea, but I am still here aren’t I?)

Believe in your self, believe that you have what what it takes to get through. Find inspiration. Let the stories of people who made it inspire you.

Find inspiration within you. List down all the things you thought you couldn’t do and you did it, no matter how small.

Read it. over and over again.

Tell yourself, you can do it, you have what it takes to do it. Develop self confidence. Stay Positive in your effort. Expect the best to happen and put in your efforts expecting the best to happen.

I believe in the essence of the Law of Attraction, you must believe and then get to work.
